north winds

whipping the snowbanks

into a frenzy . . .

our dog burrows deeper

into her fireside dreams

we pop the top

of our old campervan

on this still night

not a hint of wind, yet

every star is twinkling

seasons flash by

quicker than lightning

across this lake

the family cottage

falls to rack and ruin

in this place

of moss and shadow

we emerge

newly born, and yet

somehow ancient

a gull's shriek

carries me elsewhere . . .

images

of unborn children splashing

at the edges of my mind

icy clusters

of sumac berries droop

and shrivel

small flames doused

before they had a chance
