The Poetry Pharmacy, September 2024

Thrilled to have the following work included in The Poetry Pharmacy's collection of Zen Garden "Pills" - Haiku & Harmony, Small Moments of Calm! Two hundred entries were received, and 26 poems were chosen. Besides the transparent capsules found in every glass bottle, the colours were chosen to echo koi carp, and the plants often found in Zen Gardens.

The Poetry Pharmacy was established in 2019 by Deborah Alma, who had been prescribing poetry from her Emergency Poet ambulance for almost a decade. It was founded on the idea that poetry can do so much to match or alter a mood, and assist in so many ways with good mental health. Their goal is to bring poetry into as many unexpected places as they can, and their bottles of poetry pills are a big part of that. Each one contains biodegradable capsules, filled with poetic quotes on a theme, formulated to address a plethora of emotional ailments. They're printed on environmentally friendly, banana paper, and handmade at their shop in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire.

- no bitter pills
- no adverse reactions
- not to be swallowed (except metaphorically)

My capsule contains the following haiku:

Word and Image Feature - concrete poem: September 26, 2024

weeding out the truth this paradox of INtolerance

Artist's Statement:

The inspiration for this word cloud stems from exploring the arbitrary ways in which people look at the question of tolerant, versus intolerant, behaviours in the human and natural world. Weeding out fact from fiction in this volatile political climate can be challenging. Much like keeping a garden in check, we must choose what to keep and what to pull. The haphazard scattering of words illustrates the chaotic and myriad choices we make on a daily basis, as well as the anarchic nature of a neglected garden. The coloured fonts represent differences in gender, race, and religion as well as the diverse hues of weeds and wildflowers.

I think concrete poems add an interesting dimension to the haiku//senryu experience. Their visuals create a dynamic call-and-response effect between words and format, reinforcing the message by inviting readers to delve more deeply into the concept.

#DebbieMStrangeBookmarkGratitudeProject, 2023-2024

To mark my tenth year of publishing (2013-2023), I made over 200 bookmarks and sent them to editors around the world who have been supportive of my work. I used a variety of techniques for this labour of love, such as collage, painting, mono-printing, or photography from my abstract series, "The Poetry of Light" (all the images from this exhibition can be accessed under the exhibition tab of this blog).

I am forever grateful for all the encouragement I have received over the years. Though I've been writing songs, stories, and poetry since childhood, I didn't start taking it "seriously" until my first haiku acceptance from the esteemed poet, an'ya, which changed the course of my writing life.

I have dedicated five hours a day to writing and making art over the course of this last decade. This daily meditative practice has helped mitigate the debilitating effects of chronic illness, allowing me focus on joy rather than pain!

Thousands of my poems and artworks have now been published in hundreds of journals internationally and translated into many languages, and several books of my work have been released. This journey has enriched my life beyond measure, and has exceeded my wildest dreams!

I couldn't have done any of this without the staunch support of my husband, family, friends, and the global community of short-form poets who welcomed me into the fold. There are not enough words to convey my gratitude and love. I am indeed blessed!
